NB NDP Members - DEMAND a Yes/No vote for the Leadership
by Chuck Fournier on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 11:19pm

As I am sure all NB NDP members are aware, Dominic Cardy has stolen the NB NDP leadership. By installing his trusted supporter Steve Beam in the position of Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the campaign, he has disqualified Pierre Cyr from the race. Apparently the reasons are confidential but, from all evidence that is appearing, Cyr was disqualified after being judged to be unsuitable as a candidate, unilaterally by Mr. Beam. Here is the clause in the leadership rules which empowers Beam to make this decision:

Unsuitable candidates

(d) If the Chief Electoral Officer rules that something concerning the personal background information referred to in 2(b)(iv) makes a prospective leadership candidate unsuitable for the party leadership, the Chief Electoral Officer will first notify to prospective leadership candidate of this ruling and give him or her an opportunity to withdraw their candidacy without having the relevant information disclosed to anyone else.

If the prospective leadership candidate does not withdraw, the Chief Electoral Officer will notify the Party Executive that he or she has made this ruling about the candidate and give the reason for the ruling. The Party Executive will then meet to vote on whether to disqualify the prospective leadership candidate. A vote to disqualify a candidate will require a majority of two-thirds plus one.

I for one would like to see the minutes of the executive meeting where this decision was taken. From the wording of this clause there are no criterion by which to judge whether or not a candidate is suitable. So any reason will do.

Party democracy has been stolen from members of the NB NDP. Not only were the rules of the leadership prohibitive to members running, Steve Beam has proclaimed Cardy the winner in the leadership race. In a press release posted on the NB NDP website Beam states, “I have declared Dominic Cardy the winner of the NB NDP leadership race.” (March 2nd 2011). My question is: Who made Steve Beam King of the party? Last time I checked the only body that can declare any candidate the leader of the race is the membership through a general vote. In the absence of a competitive race there would have to be a yes/no vote before the candidate can be declared the leader. Without a vote there is no way members can express their confidence in the party’s leadership. This is treasonous.

NB NDP members should demand a Yes/No vote on the leadership if Cardy is the only candidate and stop the party from becoming his personal fiefdom.
